Moving home can be very stressful, especially if you are moving
some distance away. Here are a few tips to help your move to go as smoothly as
possible:
You don't need to leave everything until the 'moving day', consider what you
don't need to take with you, what will need packing, and if you are covered for
potential breakages. Some insurers will only cover them if professional
removers are used.
Make a priority packing list
Take some time to sift through your belongings and have a clear-out
Calculate how many boxes you will need and get these well in advance
Don't completely fill large boxes, as these may be difficult to carry
Use sturdy packing boxes, particularly for heavier items, boxes made out of
corrugated cardboard are stronger than regular ones
Check that your contents insurance will cover damage and breakages. Some
insurers may only cover you for damage and/or breakages if contents accidental
damage cover has been taken and if you use a professional removal company
Put all hazardous materials, such as paint and bleach into a separate box and
keep them away from the rest of your belongings
Start early, packing always takes longer than expected
Begin at the top of the house and work downwards. If you have an attic, it's
wise to start to empty this before you start packing the rest of the rooms
Pack one room at a time, clearly labelling each box with details of its
contents and the room it belongs to
Keep all boxes together for each room, this saves time when unpacking
Wrap items individually and place in a box that has been lined with several
layers of newspaper and a sheet of bubble wrap. Use clean tissue or wrapping
paper for the first layer to prevent leaving newspaper prints
Pack important documents together, such as birth and marriage certificates, and
keep them in a safe place.
Contents Insurance Cover
Check that your contents insurance cover, insures you for any
damage to your belongings either caused by professional removal companies or
you if you decide to move your belongings yourself.
D I Y removals:
If you're moving your belongings yourself, make sure you advise Cover Direct

Professional removal companies:
Unless you have very few possessions, it would make life more easy to hire
professionals to help you move home, and will ease some of the stress of the
move. You will have the option to arrange for it all to be done for you or you
can pack items yourself but leave the heavy objects to the experts.
